dostana - not gay and not proud

if you thought that here's finally a movie that treats homosexuality in a sensitive and sensible way, think again. firstly, the guys must have said about a million times in the movie that they are not gay, they are only pretending so that they can get an apartment and a green card. now we all know u don't get green cards faster if u're a gay couple, but that's typical hindi movie fluff so who cares. in fact, after proposition h8, who knows if they get it at all now? but when ideas start getting stolen from english movies and serials, that's so much worse! making abhishek and john stand in a public loo in adjoining stalls and having a guy walk in on them would remind u of a F.R.I.E.N.D.S episode where chandler gets his clothes stolen by julia roberts for revenge (Season 2, Episode 13 - The One After the Superbowl: Part 2). the faces collage that priyanka thinks up as a new layout for her magazine is so stolen from 13 going on 30 that it's not even funny! they dint make much of it in this movie, but if u saw the original, u'd spot it right away! john even shot the people holding frames!!! and who knows how many more ideas were stolen, just from movies we haven't seen yet! and here we thought bollywood was finally coming to maturity. shame, karan and tarun, shame!!!!
i really thought we'd see a movie about two guys who fall in love, maybe something along the lines of brokeback mountain, a truly gay couple, finally a breakthrough in hindi movies! but no, this made in fact a mockery of the whole community. boman could not have acted more cliched if he tried, and john and abhishek keep saying they're not gay, and in fact fall in love with a woman. they do have the first guy-guy lip-lock (all camera angles, no actual touching), but again the motivation is clearly a woman.
and apart from all that, it's not even a good movie!!! it drags and drags, the jokes are old, kirron's part sucks and is even more of a cliche than boman's, and i seriously do not know what sushmita mukherji was doing in the movie. frankly, the movie was so bad that it even made bobby deol look good in comparison!!! very disappointing.

LOL!!!! I am falling off my chair! Rakesh was recommended to see the movie, I'll show him your post :) I for one am grateful to these guys for making such a bad movie because your review really brightened my pretty sad day hehehehehe. Sweetheart, you really are an optimist! Do you expect these guys to try and sell a gay movie to an Indian audience who does not even want to hear about such things? Besides, if you do have such expectations, KJ is not the one who would deliver them, although some might say he has an insider's perspective into the matter LOL If such a sensitive movie is ever made, Shabana Azmi would surely be in it :) But can't think os any director or producer to have this kind of courage. Remember that most good movies bombed at the box office - and people still make movies to make money.

This was highly recommended by my wife and so i read ur post and i have to agree that it is really funny not the movie your post.

Another observation is that :) you were pretty pissed off by the fact that john and Abhishek didnt lock lips hahahahahahahaha believe me it would be gross may i suggest the beyonce and angelina version of the act .

It is surprising that Mr Johar who should know the ground reality of the situation (not that i am against homosexuals, i actually liked them when i was a bachelor cos most of them are hunks and can u imagine less competition)makes this sort of a movie but then again its not surprising cos it came from Mr johar.

@Ana LOL about the shabana azmi comment! touche!!! u know, i never realized indian society was so very closed to the gay community until i entered the blogosphere! now i read blogs about indian gays and lesbians and it makes me so sad! unable to tell their parents even, or to live an open life... i really did hope this movie would address some of that - coming from the most famous closet gay man of all in india. it's been touted in all reviews as a sensitive and courageous portrayal of gay men, and abhishek and john are getting so many accolades for their role - that's what really got my goat! :) but u're right, KJ is not the person to deliver the goods! maybe someday tho... we really need to get with it man, it's been centuries!
@Anonymus Karun - lol ya it would have been so weird to see that liplock, but it would have really said that they were serious about making a gay movie. trust a guy to wanna see girl on girl action tho hehehehehehehehe! what's in it for us dude?
